Dermatology Residency |
The Dermatology Residency Training Program in the Department of Dermatology at The University of Iowa is a fully approved, three-year program which provides trainees with the educational and practical experience that will enable them to deliver superior specialized skin care to patients. There is particular emphasis on clinical dermatology and dermatologic surgery. The correlation of cutaneous pathophysiology with clinical disease and response to therapy is strongly emphasized in our clinical services. While the emphasis of training in this department is clinical, research (either clinical or laboratory) is encouraged and adequate time for such research studies will be made available on an individual basis.
There are 13 positions in the Dermatology Residency Training Program. All trainees are expected to complete the three-year program, but appointments are for one year with yearly reappointment. Four or five new residents are accepted per year. The number varies depending upon the number of residents finishing that year. It is expected that all trainees will be eligible to sit for the examination of the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) upon completion of their residency. N.B.- All applicants must have a preliminary year of postgraduate medical training (PGY-1). The first year must consist of clinical training in one of the following types of broad-based programs in the United States accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) , or similar broad-based programs in Canada accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC):
1) - a transitional year (formerly called flexible first postgraduate year)

Rotations
First Year - Twelve month rotation in the outpatient clinic.
Second Year - Six months are spent full-time in the outpatient clinic, clinical trials, and/or the inpatient consultation service, and three months are assigned to a busy cutaneous surgery rotation with Drs. Chris Arpey and Michael Messingham. The remaining 3 months are spent at the Veterans Administration outpatient clinic.
Third Year - Quarterly assignments are dermatopathology (with Drs. Mary Stone and Vincent Liu), Inpatient Consultation Service, Veterans Administration Medical Center outpatient clinic, and a two month special study elective.
Special study periods are arranged individually to meet the training needs of each resident, under approval by the head of the department.
The Department is located in modern outpatient clinical quarters consisting of 19 examining rooms, eight surgical suites, three laser surgical suites and a phototherapy (UV-A, UV-B and narrow-band) suite. Departmental offices, including offices for residents and fellows, and spacious teaching, conference and library facilities are one floor directly above the departmental out-patient clinic area. A modern dermatologic library, including audiovisual and computer-assisted materials, is integral to the department area. The full service Hardin Library for the Health Sciences (340,000 bound volumes and 2,500 serials and journals) is adjacent to the hospital campus. The dermatology in-patient service resides in the R. J. Carver Pavilion, a 3 minute indoor walk from the departmental clinic. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has 680 beds and provides services to over 550,000 ambulatory patient clinic visits annually. Departmental research laboratories occupy 3,000 square feet in the medical laboratory facilities that are also close by.
Approximately 23,500 patient visits are made to the department clinic annually. All patients are available for student, resident and fellow teaching. Residents are encouraged and expected to carry a major responsibility for patient care under faculty supervision. The dermatology outpatient clinic at the 327 bed Veterans Administration Medical Center of Iowa City provides additional resident training experience. The diversity of case material is enriched significantly by the referral patterns (extramural and intramural) to this tertiary health care center from the large geographic area of Iowa and western Illinois. Residents see additional rare cases through regular attendance at regional and national dermatologic meetings.
It is expected that each resident will acquire sufficient knowledge and skill over the three year program to become a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, Inc.
